When Being Hard on Yourself Stops Working

by Fiona Coward

Many years ago, a friend said something to me that I didn’t understand at all at the time.

“You’re too hard on yourself.”

I remember feeling genuinely confused. I couldn’t see how I could possibly achieve what I did without pushing myself. Discipline, effort, and constant improvement were simply how things worked. I wish I’d known then what I know now.

When Pushing Yourself Feels Normal

Back then, my days were full. I was training twice a day and squeezing a full-time job in between. It didn’t feel difficult. It felt focused and disciplined.

I couldn’t imagine another way of being.

Pushing myself wasn’t something I questioned. It was just how progress happened. Frustration and self-criticism were part of the process. If I wanted to improve, I had to push harder. Effort meant forward motion. Anything else felt like laziness.

For a long time, that way of living seemed to work.

When Your Energy Isn’t Infinite

Eventually, things started to shift.

Despite all the effort, I wasn’t progressing the way I expected to. Emotional burnout slowly became a reality. The strategy that had once felt productive started taking its toll.

In 2017, it all came to a halt with complete physical collapse.

Looking back now, it’s easy to see that I had been ignoring something important: energy isn’t infinite. And constantly fighting against yourself carries a cost.

Discovering a Different Way Through BodyTalk

Around that time, I was introduced to BodyTalk.

What struck me immediately was how different it felt. Instead of trying to fix or force anything, BodyTalk created space to listen to what the body already knew.

There was no pressure to push harder or improve faster. Things were simply allowed to unfold.

To be honest, it almost felt too easy.

What Happens When You Stop Fighting Yourself

One of the biggest surprises was discovering that being kinder and gentler with myself didn’t turn me into a failure.

In fact, the opposite happened.

The constant inner noise started to quiet down. For the first time, I didn’t feel obsessed with pushing myself forward. And interestingly, there was no downside.

We’re often taught that the only way to get ahead is to push harder and try more. But when inner resistance eases, progress can begin to happen with far less effort.

Life begins to feel more like flow.

Sometimes Real Change Comes From Paying Attention

Things didn’t improve because I tried harder.

They improved because I stopped fighting myself.

Some of the most meaningful shifts in life don’t come from effort or discipline. They come from paying attention, gently noticing what your body and mind are already trying to tell you.

If any part of this resonates with you, perhaps you might take a moment to sit with it quietly and imagine what life could feel like if things flowed a little more easily.

And if you ever feel curious about what kind of support your own body might need, you’re always welcome to reach out and explore how I work.
