The Guilt Trap

by Fiona Coward

There are moments in life when you look back and think, If only I’d known then what I know now.

Maybe it was during a period of pushing your body too hard.

Maybe it was in a relationship that left you feeling confused or depleted.

Maybe it was in a season where your body was trying to communicate with you, but you didn't yet understand the language it was speaking.

Looking back, it's easy to see things more clearly. It's easy to judge decisions, to question choices, to feel embarrassed by who you once were.

But here's something important to remember:

You were doing the best you could with the awareness you had at the time.

The Weight of Looking Back

Many of us get stuck in guilt or shame when we reflect on our past.

We replay conversations, revisit decisions or question our past selves.

And slowly, guilt begins to take hold.

It tells us we should have known better. It suggests we weren't enough. It anchors us to a version of ourselves we've already outgrown.

But growth doesn't come from self-punishment. It comes from awareness.

And awareness arrives when we are ready for it...not a moment sooner.

From Guilt to Growth

In my work with BodyTalk, I've come to deeply understand that our past selves were shaped by more than just choices.

They were shaped by:

  • The level of awareness we had
  • The stresses we were carrying
  • The experiences we hadn't yet processed
  • The stories our bodies were still holding onto

Sometimes, the answers we're searching for aren't “out there.” They're already within you... Stored in your body, waiting to be understood.

When new awareness emerges, it's not meant to be turned into a weapon against your former self. It's meant to become a doorway, a way forward.

Guilt, Reframed

When we shift our perspective, something powerful happens:

  • Regret becomes reflection
  • Guilt becomes learning
  • Shame becomes acknowledgment

This doesn't mean we avoid accountability.

We still grow. We still apologise when needed. We still take responsibility for our actions.

But we do it from a place of expansion, not self-condemnation.

Becoming, Not Beating Yourself Up

You are not the same person you were years ago. Maybe not even months ago.

There is something deeply freeing about recognising that you are always becoming, always learning, always expanding into more awareness.

When we stop trying to make our past self “wrong,” we create space to honour who we were.

That version of you:

  • Survived
  • Tried
  • Showed up
  • Did the best they could

And from that place of compassion, real change becomes possible. Not through force. Not through shame. But through understanding.

A Gentle Reminder

If you've been carrying regret about something from your past, perhaps this is what you need to hear:

You did the best you could with the awareness you had. And now you know more.

If you're curious about how your body might be holding onto old patterns and what becomes possible when those patterns are gently brought into awareness, I'm always open to that conversation. Book a BodyTalk session with me.

Growth doesn't require you to be harsh with yourself.

Sometimes, it begins with kindness.

“BodyTalk has taught me to listen better to my physical body. I often wonder if living in one’s head and not paying attention to the messages of one’s body is a cause of many of our health problems. If you seek wellness, I encourage you to listen to what your body may be telling you...”
