Acceptance Is Not Settling
Nothing is Written in Stone
Many of us hear the word and think it means giving up, resigning ourselves to what has happened, or believing that our past has permanently defined our future. But true acceptance is something very different.
Owning Your Life
Acceptance is the willingness to acknowledge our story without fighting it.
Our experiences, our losses, our disappointments, our triumphs, and even our mistakes have all shaped us. Pretending they didn't happen, wishing they had been different, or carrying resentment towards them only keeps us in relationship with the past. Acceptance doesn't mean approving of everything that happened. It simply means saying, "This is only a part of my story."
And from that place, something begins to shift. Because acceptance is not the same as settling.
Be Your Own Author
You can accept that life has brought you to where you are today while refusing to believe that this is all your life can ever be. Your story is not a finished book. It is still being written. Every day offers the opportunity to respond differently, to see yourself differently, and to discover parts of yourself that may have been hidden beneath old experiences or beliefs.
Our past may explain us, but it does not have to imprison us.
Getting Perspective
This is one of the reasons I value BodyTalk so deeply. Rather than asking us to erase the past, it helps us become aware of what our body, mind, and subconscious may still be holding onto. As those old stresses, beliefs, and emotional imprints begin to soften, we often find ourselves relating to our history with greater compassion and less resistance.
From that place, new possibilities emerge naturally.
Acceptance makes peace with the past.
Non-acceptance refuses to make the past your future.
Perhaps wisdom is learning to hold both.
Until next time,
