Embracing Our Growth and Transformation
‘Self-actualisation represents the highest level of psychological growth and fulfillment that an individual can achieve.’ – Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
What Do You Yearn For?
If you’re reading this, it's most likely you have a deep interest in self-discovery and personal growth. Today, I want to delve into the concept of self-actualisation, exploring what it means, what drives us to embark on this transformative journey, and the emotions that accompany our decision to evolve.
A Greater Version of Ourselves
Self-actualisation is the pursuit of becoming the best version of ourselves, reaching our full potential in all aspects of life. It is a continuous process of self-reflection, learning, and growth that allows us to align our actions with our core values and aspirations.
So, what propels us to embark on this path? Deep within us, there exists a profound and inherent desire for something beyond what we are currently experiencing. It is a yearning that stems from the depths of our soul, an innate longing for something more meaningful and fulfilling. This deep-rooted yearning is what drives us to deepen our understanding of who we are, so we can seek out new experiences that grow us, that are meaningful for us. It empowers us to create a life of purpose. It’s the sense of our own destiny.
Being Disconnected
What if we suppress this feeling of potential greatness?
Our journey from childhood to adulthood is filled with pressures imposed upon us by social, familial and cultural expectations which can suffocate our innate yearning for fulfillment. This can result in a deep sense of emptiness within us. It is during these times that we may find ourselves grappling with the heavy weight of depression, anxiety, and even destructive behaviours such as addiction. In our quest to find solace and meaning, we attempt to fill this void within our soul or spirit with external stimuli. We may strive for perfectionism in the hope that it will bring us a sense of completion or seek out various outlets that offer temporary relief from the ache within.
However, it's important to recognise that these pursuits fall short in truly addressing the root cause of our emptiness – a disconnection from self. Acknowledging and understanding these complex responses is an essential step towards healing. It requires introspection and self-compassion as we navigate through the shedding of who we are not. By exploring who we really are at a soul level, we can begin to dismantle the inner barriers that prevent us from reaching fulfillment.
Get Uncomfortable
The journey towards self-actualisation requires stepping out of our comfort zones and embracing change. It demands vulnerability as we confront our limitations and face uncertainty head-on. However, it's through these challenges that we find immense strength and resilience within ourselves.
We may also experience a mix of emotions - excitement at the prospect of transformation, curiosity about what lies ahead, but also moments of doubt or apprehension. After all, while change is frightening, it's important to remember that growth often occurs outside our comfort zones.
Everyone's journey is unique - it's shaped by our individual experiences, strengths, and aspirations. This is powerful in itself as it strips away our need to compare to others or judge ourselves.
