Burnout, BodyTalk and Better Days

Burnout is now recognised as an official medical condition. It's defined as “chronic workplace stress that not been successfully managed.” But burnout doesn't only belong in the workplace. Parents, school children and students are also subject to chronic stress – their every minute packed with demands on time and energy.

Stress is an emotional response to our busy environment and overload. This would be fine if it was temporary. However, we allow anger, tension, worry, resentment to stew along with frustration and trauma because there is neither time nor space to process and release these feelings.

We're always racing on to the next item on the agenda – deliveries, study, projects, exams, deadlines, meetings.

Stress hormones drive blood to our limbs and shut off the immune system to save energy. But generally, we're stuck behind a desk. What happens to this energy? It becomes trapped in our tissues and cells and if not released, ultimately affects their functioning.

And, if all this energy is constantly going to our limbs, where is it coming from?

Our other organs. They get depleted and over time, malfunction and we get ill. The rise in the onset of autoimmune diseases is strongly linked to chronic stress. Our bodies simply cannot cope with dysfunctional energy systems especially when combined with a constant experience of negative feelings.

Burnout is a big red flag

Why – with all the tools and knowledge at our disposal – is burnout still a problem? Common therapies such as taking a break, paper over the deeper issues.

One, there needs to be a shift in mindset and a setting of boundaries. Two, the toxic residue of all those emotions attached to stress has to be cleared.

There is an easy way to wipe the slate clean, to really get rid of the effects of burnout and to create a fresh start.
